Allen's The Historical Character of Jesus

My review of David M. Allen's The Historical Character of Jesus: Canonical Insights from Outside the Gospels (MN: Fortress Press, 2014) was published in a recent edition of The Conrad Grebel Review (33/3 [2015]) on pp. 394-396. It's a solid book that examines the "character" of Jesus as he is depicted in canonical texts other than the Gospels. My main take away is that the suffering and death of Jesus as a model for Christians is the aspect of Jesus' life that these texts present as the most relevant.
